The Trenton Music Makers Orchestra will present its annual Martin Luther King Day Concert, We Shall Overcome, in an abbreviated 13-minute format, on YouTube Live. The virtual concert will take place on Monday, January 18, at 6:00pm, free of charge. The link can be accessed from here.
POPULAR bandsman and entertainments agency founder Derek Wells has died at the age of 80. Derek, who died on December 14, was born in 1940 to Stan and Phylis Wells in Moreton in Marsh before the family moved to Evesham. He attended Bengeworth Junior School and on passing his 11 plus exam in 1951, moved to Prince Henry’s Grammar School. Derek’s lifelong interest in music was already evident, as he sang in the church choir at St Peter’s in Bengeworth, while money left by great-grandmother Fanny Hopkins was used to buy his first saxophone. Derek was taught to play the instrument by George Hands, a member of the Music Makers Band.
Albert Griffiths
Albert Griffiths, frontman of the reggae band The Gladiators, died on Tuesday evening in Aberdeen, St Elizabeth. He was 74 years old.
His son Anthony confirmed Griffiths death to
Loop News. He had been diagnosed with Parkinson s disease over 10 years ago and stopped touring with The Gladiators since.
Cabel Stephenson, who managed the Gladiators between 1994 to 2004, said: The Gladiators was one of the first groups in reggae to enter the international global space and Albert was breaking language barriers and championing reggae music from the 1970s. He gave us one of Jamaica s biggest number one songs, Hello Carol . He was a great person, he played the bass but he was known as a brilliant rhythm guitarist who played on many hit songs at Studio One.
