38 Years Ago: Metallica Enter the Studio to Record 'Kill 'Em All'

Widely regarded as the first definitive thrash album, Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All, though forceful, declarative and crushing, was a punishing exercise in music business protocol. While it upped the ante on the precision, rage and songwriting of bands like Venom and Diamond Head, it was a record that, from the start, was ruled by compromise and control. Kill ‘Em All wasn’t the original title. Metallica wanted to call the album Metal Up Your Ass, but when Important, the distribution outlet of their label, Megaforce, balked, they were forced to change the name. As the story goes, bassist Cliff Burton’s reaction was hardly favorable. “Aw, man, f k ‘em. F k those f kers! Just kill ‘em. Kill ‘em all,” he declared. And the album title was born.

38 Years Ago: Kirk Hammett Invited to Audition for Metallica In the middle of the afternoon on April 1, 1983, Exodus guitarist Kirk Hammett was sitting on the toilet when the phone rang. He picked it up and it was the band’s manager Mark Whitaker. After exchanging pleasantries, Whitaker cut to the chase and asked Hammett if he wanted to audition for Metallica. Figuring the call was an April Fool’s prank, Hammett responded, “Yeah, right” and then hung up. Whitaker called back and explained Metallica manager Jonny Z wanted him to call Hammett since he was close to both bands. When Hammett asked why Metallica wanted to replace Dave Mustaine, Whitaker said, “He f -ing sucks, man,” according to the biography Birth School Metallica Death, Vol. 1, by Paul Brannigan and Ian Winwood. “His tone sucks, his playing… He’s a f -ing drunk.”
