Norris Meighan Sr. was wrapping up a birthday celebration with his sons and other members of his family on Monday night when a team of police officers showed up at their property. It happened here on Queen Charlotte Street where the father of seven was getting ready to call it a night. What he did not know was that the encounter with law enforcement would quickly become a violent melee with shots being fired.

“We believe that employment that centers around at-risk youths can decrease these youths likelihood in being in the street and involvement in gang-related violence or criminal behavior. We also believe that it can also help them to develop that sense of responsibility and it’s a form of financial incentive for them. I see today as a good day, a good example of how the business community can collaborate with us.”
The idea was that with the string trimmer, Baptist would create employment not only for himself but also for his friends on Police Street. But something happened that has since rendered the transformation short-lived. Over the weekend, a video clip began circulating on social media. The controversial Eleventh Amendment is drafted from similar laws that were passed in the United Kingdom back in the eighties. The Representation of the People Act 1981 disqualifies anyone who has been convicted of an offence and has been sentenced to be imprisoned or detained for more than a year. The amended Representation of the People Act 1983 also disqualifies anyone who has been convicted or has been reported guilty of a corrupt or illegal electoral practice or of an offence relating to donations (campaign contributions). Notwithstanding the clear language in that piece of legislation which has been adopted by Belizean lawmakers, there is growing opposition to the Eleventh Amendment and many contend that it does not allow for true reform. News Five spoke with one youth leader earlier today who holds strong views against it.

Was there an “Exorcism” at BDF Camp?
The Belize Defense Force has issued a statement on a video in wide circulation on social media which purports to show a soldier being possessed by a spirit. Described as an exorcism by many who have watched the short clip, the press release confirms that the incident happened on Tuesday night and that it was in fact a prayer session being held for the soldier who sought intercession with a superior officer. Earlier today, News Five spoke with Acting Chief of Staff, Major Rogelio Pop. He explains what took place that night and why the soldier sought spiritual help.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many of us to rethink the way in which we go about our daily lives. In the hospitality industry, the strictures that come along with the many regulatory adjustments, where restaurants and bars are concerned, have prompted business owners to return to the drawing board. News Five’s Isani was at a soft opening for a new restaurant in Belize City last night. Welcome to Ochuna, an indoor/outdoor dining experience at the Tropicana Casino that offers something different than what is otherwise being offered on the entertainment strip.
