The Bizarre Hereford Mappa Mundi Map | Mysterious Universe

In 1855, renovation work was being carried out on Bishop Audley’s Chantry, a cathedral in England, when something very strange was found languishing away in the darkness beneath the floor. It was a sheet of vellum, or calf skin, measuring about five feet long and four and a half feet wide, and although faded and damaged, when it was examined and restored it was found to be a medieval world map of some sort, one of the largest ever seen. But this was no ordinary map, as upon its sprawling face were many strange features and wonders that have inspired much discussion to this day and has made what has come to be known as the Hereford Mappa Mundi one of the weirdest and most mysterious maps ever found, as well as one of the most significant historical maps in the world.

There s no mystery to Hereford s traffic issues

The six schools, namely Aylestone, Bishop of Hereford Bluecoat, Whitecross, Hereford Academy, Hereford Cathedral and the Sixth Form College cater for pupils in the 11-18 age group. The first two schools in this list need new safe off-road cycle routes constructed from their main school catchment areas. For Aylestone School, Prospect Walk could be widened, extended and upgraded. For Bishop of Hereford Bluecoat School, Holywell Gutter should be opened up. Fortuitously, Hereford Academy benefits from being next to Great Western Way and Whitecross at the end of the route through Moor Park. Safe cycle parking then needs to be provided at these schools together with positive encouragement to maximise use of these routes.

Before his arrival Lloyd had been attending the festival for nearly 20 years and was keenly aware that many in the Festival Chorus had sung under the baton of Edward Elgar.

Peta Darnley says why she loves Herefordshire

Have you always lived in Herefordshire? What are your earliest memories of the county. I didn’t grow up near here: I am a Devon farmer’s daughter so very much a country person. The first time I came to Herefordshire was to visit my boyfriend’s – now husband’s – parents for the first time. My trepidation about this was blown away by the beauty of the vounty. That was over 25 years ago and this first impression has never dimmed. How would you describe Herefordshire to people who don’t know it? The great undiscovered gem of the English countryside.
