Retired Western New England University School of Law professor Amy B. Cohen has long been fascinated with the past, but she never really inquired about her own family history.
But when her first grandchild was born in 2010, she realized that he might someday want to know about his great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents, so she began asking questions and doing research. “Genealogy became a passion for me,” she said. “It provides a combination of all the things I love: history, research, reading, problem solving and writing. As a family historian, you are part detective, part historian and part storyteller.”

Northampton native Mike Chinoy brings story of Irish human rights hero to life

Award-winning journalist Mike Chinoy of Northampton will be featured in a March 24 virtual presentation about his book on human rights activist Kevin Boyle.

When Mike Chinoy was growing up in Northampton, he was encouraged to follow interests that other teens might have found unusual.
“A senior in high school, interested in Chinese? But my parents always encouraged me to read and to explore interests that might seem unconventional,” says the now-68-year-old journalist and author.
Chinoy’s passions led to his hiring as one of CNN’s first foreign correspondents. These days, his time is spent with think tanks and institutes, connected with the University of Southern California, and with work on a new book chronicling the history of American journalists in China.
