My mother, June Miles, who has died aged 96, was known as a landscape, portrait and still life artist. In a review in the Cornishman in 2004, Frank Ruhrmund wrote of her that “… there is a sense of peace in her work that passes all understanding … An artist who has never courted publicity, never owned a trumpet of her own let alone blown it, June Miles must be one of the most retiring, unassuming, and consequently one of the most underrated of the many artists practising in Penwith.”

He said: “You don’t get to meet Alexander Armstrong or Richard Osman beforehand, and you are not allowed to watch the other shows because they want to see your surprise when they announce the prize money. “You can imagine our shock when they said it was £15,000. “Alexander (Armstrong) thought it was brilliant because they’d never had a contestant called Leighton on the show before.

Six school pupils had the thrill of being the first to experience a new ride at Alton Towers alongside celebrity author David Walliams last week.
Rosie and Niamh Allen, Jake and Zac Wood, and Isla and Noah Bagshaw – all from St Edward’s Church of England Academy in Leek – joined the comedian and now hugely successful children’s writer to give their official seal of approval to a new ride at the theme park, Gangsta Granny, based on David’s best-selling book.
