Management of fecal sludge crucial to save waterbodies: speakers

DNCC Workshop Staff Correspondent Staff Correspondent To save canals, rivers and waterbodies in Dhaka, fecal sludge management is very important and authorities should take immediate steps for its proper management, said speakers at a workshop yesterday. Seventy-one percent household latrines directly or indirectly (85 percent in slums) discharge to open drains, leading to pollution of lakes and canals within the city, said Prof Dr Mujibur Rahman of Buet in his online presentation, held at a city hotel. Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) organised the workshop on sewerage management where representatives of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), Wasa, Department of Environment, architects, planners and NGOs took part.

In addition to the one in Agargaon, DNCC later unveiled another lane in Manik Mia Avenue a couple of months back as part of a Tk 694 crore  urban development project. But either of them is  yet to make any meaningful impact in city life, cyclists say.

Managing Dhaka’s 26 Canals, Box Culverts : Charge goes to two city corporations Star file photo Staff Correspondent Staff Correspondent The capital s city corporations yesterday formally took over the management and maintenance responsibilities of 26 canals and 10 kilometres of box culverts from Dhaka Wasa, raising hope that the city s long-standing waterlogging problem would be solved. Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) had been responsible for the 26 canals (84.5km) and the 10 box culverts (around 10km) since 1988. It also looks after 385km of storm water drainage. The DNCC and DSCC have been managing 2,200km of pipe and surface drains. Chief Executive Officer ABM Amin Ullah Nuri of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), his Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) counterpart Md Selim Reza, and Managing Director of Dhaka Wasa Taqsem A Khan signed an MoU on behalf of their organisations at a city hotel yesterday.
