By just trying to be good neighbours, a pop-up beer garden in Winnipeg may have helped some people experiencing homelessness find a place to live.
When they chose to set up at the Granite Curling Club on Granite Way, just west of the Osborne Street bridge the owners of The Beer Can knew they would have to figure out how they were going to approach the encampment behind the club, says co-owner Brad Chute.

A new campaign to tackle air quality in Colchester is taking aim at drivethru fast food fans in the town. All three McDonald’s drivethru restaurants in Colchester have pledged support to Colchester Council’s CAReless Pollution campaign. Signs have been installed at each asking customers to switch off their engines when stationary. The distinctive yellow CAReless Pollution signs, which simply urge drivers to “Switch off your engine every time you wait”, have been installed at the Cowdray Avenue, Tollgate and Colchester Stadium McDonald’s. Craig Newness, managing director of CGN Restaurants, which owns the McDonald’s franchise in Colchester, said: “I am pleased to be supporting the CAReless campaign.
VANCOUVER A young man charged in connection with a 2019 shooting that left a woman seriously injured in New Westminster, B.C., has pleaded guilty, according to police. Authorities said Carlos Monteith, 24, pleaded guilty this month to discharging a firearm with intent and possession of a loaded prohibited firearm. He was sentence to six-and-a-half years on the first count and three years on the second. The Nov. 17, 2019 shooting prompted a major police response on Osborne Street, where first responders found a woman in serious condition at the scene. Monteith had fled the area, but was found and arrested days later in Vancouver with help from the Vancouver Police Department s Emergency Response Team.
