The only thing standing in the way of two years of rent freezes for Manitoba renters is the Residential Tenancies Branch. But if history is any indication, they tend to approve rent hikes whenever they re asked.

Some stories take longer to get around to than others.
In the fall of 2011 I hooked up with Fiona Odlum at an Academy Road Starbucks for a lighthearted feature about people who report on traffic for a living. Odlum, currently a contributor at CBC Saskatchewan, was working for 680 CJOB at the time, clueing rush-hour commuters in on stalls, lane closures and fender-benders they’d be wise to avoid.
Odlum turned the tables at one point by asking a few questions of her own including, So, what’s your main beat?

To most of us, they are anonymous numbers in a grim and ongoing count.
But each one represents one of the more than 900 Manitoba lives lost over the past year to COVID-19.
Many have gone without a published obituary marking their loss. Without family and friends able to gather to grieve at a funeral and, later, celebrate their memories.
Manitoba’s first positive case was announced March 12, followed by three more the next day. The first COVID-19 hospital admission occurred March 17, and the province declared a state of emergency on March 20. We’re in this together and we’re grieving together, Mayor Brian Bowman said then. Our deepest condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.
