The Championships 2021 closed with a truly world class performance by UK raider Addeybb in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. Addeybb, racing in blinkers for the first time proved too strong for Australia’s best Group 1 performer Verry Elleegant. Verry Elleegant’s trainer Chris Waller won two of the four Group 1s contested on the day with Hungry Heart winning the Australian Oaks and Selino giving former champion Sydney apprentice Ronnie Stewart his first Australian Group 1 victory in the Sydney Cup. Last year’s Doncaster Mile winner Nettoyer won her second Randwick Group 1 mile when knocking off the hot favourite Probabeel in the Queen Of The Turf.

Hungry Heart 2021 Australian Oaks

Hungry Heart, named after the classic Bruce Springsteen song, is a hit in her own right. The outstanding three-year-old filly by superhorse Frankel scored her second Group 1 win in succession with her impressive effort in the $1 million ATC Australian Oaks (2400m) at Royal Randwick. Trainer Chris Waller prepared his 12th Group 1 winner of the season – and the 123rd of his phenomenal career – with Hungry Heart, a filly he describes as “very special”. Hungry Heart was considered good enough to run in the Golden Slipper last season where she finished fifth to Farnan but she has trained on to complete the Vinery Stud-ATC Australian Oaks double.

Brisbane jockey Ron Stewart to ride Selino for Chris Waller in the Group 1 Sydney Cup

12:39PM15 April 2021 The wheel will turn full circle for much-travelled former Sydney champion apprentice jockey Ron Stewart when he makes a hit-and-run Group 1 raid in Sydney for master trainer Chris Waller on Saturday. The Sydney jockeys’ room was where Brisbane hoop Stewart cut his teeth, winning the apprentices title in 2002-03, in a journey which has since seen him ride internationally in Singapore, Mauritius and Macau. Now firmly established as part of the Queensland riding ranks, the 37-year-old lightweight rider has been called up by Waller to ride former import Selino in the Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on Saturday.
