Austin Animal Center opens at full capacity, facing space crisis for dogs

In Urgent Need Of Adoptions, Austin Animal Center Removes COVID-19 Occupancy Limits

Oddball is a dog at the Austin Animal Center. Austin Animal Center has run out of kennel space and says it urgently needs homes for an “overwhelming” number of dogs. In order to help get animals adopted, the center is opening at 100% capacity for the first time in over a year starting Friday. To help Austin keep its No Kill status, the shelter is asking people to adopt medium or large dogs. AAC says it needs to find homes for at least 100 animals this weekend. “On Tuesday morning, we opened the shelter already in the red for large dogs,” Chief Animal Services Officer Don Bland said in a press release. “Kennel space for medium and large dogs is completely depleted.”

AUSTIN, Texas - Austin s eviction moratorium was extended until Aug.1. Tenants are protected until then. However, beginning June 1, nothing is stopping a landlord from filing a notice of eviction, if the tenant has unpaid rent of at least five months.  That can leave many questioning where to put their pets.

Austin pet owners make heartbreaking choices amid housing uncertainty

As the end of eviction moratoriums loom, Austin animal shelters are seeing an increase in the number of pet owners requesting to surrender their animals. At Austin Animal Center, the city s shelter, more than 100 animals were on the waiting list to be surrendered as of Tuesday, said Jennifer Olohan, spokesperson for the center. At one point, the list was at 275 animals. Olohan said pet owners are anticipating the end of eviction moratoriums, which began last year as the coronavirus pandemic led to job losses and furloughs across the country. In April, Travis County Judge Andy Brown and Austin Mayor Steve Adler extended their eviction moratorium orders to last until Aug. 1. But starting June 1, Austin and Travis County landlords can issue a notice to vacate to residents who have not paid rent in five months or longer, and have exhausted all assistance remedies.
