Spencer Brown Running Back
40-yard dash: 4.58
Notes: Brown is UAB’s all-time leader in rushing yards (4,011), rushing touchdowns (41) and 100-yard rushing games (19). Additionally, Brown has played snaps on special teams during his career.
He said it: “It felt good and I was explosive. It shows my hard work, trying to lose weight and get my body right, has really paid off. I had a lot of reps (in my career), been in a lot of high-stake situations and learned how to keep my poise.”

5 things to watch as UAB opens spring practice

It’s been three months since the UAB football team ended a most unusual season in the most unusual way.
Despite winning a second conference championship in three years, the Blazers were unable to finish the 2020 season in style South Carolina withdrew from the Gasparilla Bowl less than a week before it was scheduled but are back on the field as they opened spring practice, Tuesday, March 16, in Legacy Pavilion at the UAB Football Operations Complex in Birmingham.
“We always look for great organization and that’s the first thing I told them,” UAB head coach Bill Clark said. “That’s why I look for all the little things: Do they come out properly equipped? Are their minds right? We got high expectations for this group. For us, it’s can we practice in the manner we want to practice with everybody getting better and protecting each other. I saw that today.”

One of the best parts of the NFL draft process is seeing young men take advantage of their opportunities. The NFL is always looking for talented players, and they don’t always look for them in the big-name football factories. Some great football players have entered the League from the ranks of the small schools, some spending time at a junior college (JuCo) before transferring to a bigger school.
That, as it so happens, is the route taken by Austin Watkins Jr. out of UAB. Watkins is a JuCo transfer who has been impressing at each stop along his journey. He stood out on the field for the UAB Blazers, and stood out again in the week of practice before the 2021 Senior Bowl, and in the game itself.
