Pittsburgh-based autonomous technology startup, Argo AI, has partnered with Ford and Volkswagen for the past two years to independently integrate its self-driving system (SDS) into purpose-built vehicles for both automakers. Backed by a combined $7 billion automaker investment, Argo AI focuses on developing Level 4 autonomous vehicle technologies intended for ride-sharing and goods delivery applications in urban centers.
From this collaboration, Argo AI has developed a long-range LiDAR sensor that could significantly advance the next generation of driverless technology. Ford would use it for a fleet of ride-hailing vehicles soon, and VW would offer vehicles with the capability a few years down the road.

Lidars are laser-based sensors that are a key component to many autonomous vehicle technologies and help them perceive the environment around the cars. James Peng, Pony.ai CEO said the startup chose Luminar’s Iris lidar for its performance but also as it can be integrated into the car better than traditional lidars. “It’s actually starting to blur the line between what you see as a very well designed passenger vehicle and the monstrosities that have been on top of some of the AV test vehicles,” said Austin Russell, founder and CEO of Luminar.

When a self-driving car passes by, you tend to notice. The towering sensors whirling around on the top of the car more than stand out.Â
But Chinese autonomous vehicle company Pony.ai is reimagining the roofline for its next generation of autonomous taxicabs. As part of a partnership with autonomous vehicle sensor maker Luminar announced Monday, the Pony.ai robo-taxis will feature a flat roof housing the necessary cameras, radar, and LiDAR sensors, which use light to measure distance between objects so the car can see.
