Jenny Wu is trying to give me a lot of stuff for free. She’s the owner of The Red Pearl, a beloved Chinese restaurant in downtown Boulder Creek, the gateway to what’s left of Big Basin Redwoods State Park. Wu lost her house in the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex fires and temporarily shuttered her restaurant due to the fires and pandemic, and recently her business was robbed. But here she is, shoving extra egg rolls in with my order, and dashing across the restaurant to the refrigerator, insisting I take a soda, or how about two? No charge.

We are hiking through Cherry Canyon, a dusty trail popping with red, yellow and purple wildflowers on Santa Rosa Island within Channel Islands National Park, and we are looking for one of the world’s smallest foxes. We might see a tiny head peeking out of tall grasses on the hillside, or one of the brazen little creatures could even approach us, a ranger said. But on these warmer spring days, they like to crouch and cool off in their dens, awaiting kits. So far, the only trace of them is abundant scat.

Airport Inn Bar & Grill is an all-American saloon in Yosemite National Park s gateway town of Mariposa. It s beloved by many long-time residents, and legendary for its comfort food.
It also openly defied the regional stay-at-home order to shut down in December, and its regulars are known to be gun ownership-advocating, COVID-19-denying Trump supporters. And not just one, but several, nooses are hanging around the property.
