JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – To truly understand what it was like to be a Black tourist during segregation, you have to go back to that era and open a book: The Green Book.
It was a Black traveler’s guide to finding hotels, restaurants, filling stations, entertainment venues, and other businesses across the country that would serve them.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville’s LaVilla neighborhood was once its own city, where African Americans flourished and prospered. But when the area became part of Jacksonville in 1887, it struggled to keep its identity.
LaVilla was considered a safe haven for freed Black residents because many Union soldiers remained in the area after the Civil War and literally protected the community.
LaVilla was nearly wiped out in Jacksonville’s great fire of 1901, but from the ashes rose a part of downtown that eventually would become part of the Black renaissance.

WOLCOTT Two women have been charged after police say they were found operating a drug factory out of a local motel room.
A bail enforcement agent called police around 5:15 p.m. Thursday to say he was about to take someone into custody at the Amerivue Motel on Wolcott Road.
The agent told police the individual, wanted on a felony warrant, may be armed, so they responded to the motel.
