The Oppo Watch is the latest in a growing sea of wearables aiming to challenge the ruling Apple Watch SE’s place as king of the mid-range smart-timepieces.
However, rather than try and challenge the Apple Watch SE using design flourishes, like a circular screen or nifty package of sports features, the Oppo Watch takes an alternative tact. Instead of innovating it aims to entice buyers by sticking as close as possible to the Apple Watch’s winning formula as possible.
Rather than remake the wheel Oppo’s decided to do what many Android fans want, make an Apple Watch that works with their phone – for those out of the know, one of the only bad things about Apple Watches is that they only work with other Apple tech and software.
Users have occasionally reported problems in recent months, too.
Google is aware of the issue and a fix is apparently rolling out now.
Update: March 11, 2021 (05:11 PM ET): After word started to spread that “OK Google” detection had broken on some Wear OS watches, Google issued a statement acknowledging the problem. Now, it appears a fix is live.
Users on Reddit are reporting that hotword detection is back on their watches. It’s not totally clear which update brings the fix, but it’s likely to do with the watch versions of the Google or Play Store apps.
Either way, the best way to get the fix would be to run any available updates on your Wear OS watch. Just head to the Play Store on your watch and tap the My Apps button. Run any updates in there and then try to start a Google Assistant command with “OK Google.” Of course, you’ll need this feature to be turned on first, but if you’re one of the people who have had this not working, you likely already have it toggle

Rumors that Samsung may potentially ditch Tizen, its proprietary OS for wearables, for Google’s Wear OS, have been flying lately. It’s a baffling idea, considering that Samsung smartwatches are the best Android-friendly smartwatches right now, and Wear OS is a stinking hot mess.

Case in point: 9to5Google reports that the “OK Google” or “Hey Google” phrases to trigger Google Assistant on Wear OS watches have been
broken for months. Google also confirmed to The Verge that it was aware of this bug, which has been plaguing users since at least November 2020, and is working on a fix. While you can still use the Assistant by long-pressing buttons (which is actually my preferred method of bringing up Assistant on Wear OS), it’s telling that Google has known about the problem for this long and still hasn’t fixed the issue.
