IWF delays Congress after agreeing to need for completely new constitution Friday, 22 January 2021 The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has moved it s two-day Constitutional Congress back by a month, but will go ahead with elections as planned in the last week of March. The decision has been made because so much work is needed on improving the IWF s governance - one of the areas in which it has been criticised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The sport’s Olympic status is under constant review by the IOC after a series of corruption scandals and concerns over doping. Last October, after the IWF Board ousted its reformist Interim President Ursula Papandrea of the United States, the IOC said it stressed the critical importance of continuing reforms within the IWF in order to ensure the independence of its anti-doping operations and the modernisation of its governance and management structures .

Damaris Young is the new president of the Olympic Committee of Panama. (Young) Young, a former national basketball team member and jurist specializing in Sports Law and Management, is the first woman to lead the national Olympic movement and the first in Central American Olympic history. She is the 16th president of the COP since its foundation in 1934. Published January 8, 2021, 6:00 AM The National Competition Policy (NCP), which has been adopted by the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), is just awaiting approval by Malacanang for its implementation via an administrative order. The Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) reported the pending Malacanang approval of the NCP, which Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC) was signed with NEDA in July last year. Once approved by President Duterte, the NCP will be implemented across all government agencies and instrumentalities and is expected to red flag anti-competition practices in the country. The JMC enjoins government agencies to craft pro-competitive policies and interventions; promote competitive neutrality and review possible anti-competitive measures within the bureaucracy; strengthen the Governance Commission for GOCCs (GCG); and implement the competition law.

Weightlifting is under pressure from the IOC to fix governance and anti-doping issues.(Global Athlete) The deadline for the IWF’s Reform and Governance Commission to present a new constitution and bylaws is January 22, which will give federation members about two months before deciding whether to approve it at the Constitution and Electoral Congresses scheduled for late March. IWF interim president Michael Irani, in his end of year message, said the commission “is making remarkable progress” toward its goal while adding that for some  the deadlines we have set for reform mean a busy end of year .
