Image Source: IANS News Chennai, April 13 : With Covid-19 cases surging across Tamil Nadu, there is an increase in the number of containment zones in Chennai. The Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to classify each street with more than 3 active cases as a containment zone. There are 210 streets with more than 6 cases and 52 streets with more than 10 containment zones, according to civic officials. There are some streets which have more than 30 active cases like the one near the DAV Girls School that has 38 cases.

In 2020, Kannagi Nagar Awas was formed as a resettlement and rehabilitation area of Chennai for the Tsunami victims with around 80,000 being relocated here. It is a microcosm of Chennai with the usual problems including infrastructure, drug related cases, alcohol abuse, unemployment, crime against women etc.

This IAS Officer is turning a Chennai garbage yard into a lush forest The first Miyawaki forest conceptualised and implemented by Dr. Albi John was at Kotturpuram, a garbage yard of 23,000 sq ft area at the banks of Adayar River. By IANS Quad summit 2021 Dr. Alby John, a Chennai-based IAS officer, is converting a garbage yard into a lush green forest in the heart of the metropolis. After being posted as Regional Deputy Commissioner (South) in Greater Chennai Corporation, the 2013 batch officer has already planted five Miyawaki forests or micro forests, turning concrete areas into lush zones of greenery. The trend of Miyawaki forests was first pioneered, conceptulaised and popularised by 93-year-old Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. The basic idea is to grow plants without leaving any space, thus leading to plants growing straight and forming lush green forests in small areas of land.
