Citizens look for ways to communicate free from state monitoring
[Cairo] Clubhouse, an invitation-only audio-chat iPhone app launched in April 2020, is taking the Middle East, and Egypt in particular, by storm. A version for Android phones is in the works.
Thousands of Egyptians are flocking to join the app, which offers users private “discussion rooms” on sensitive topics, away from the eyes and ears of the security services. Any user can create a public or private virtual room, with moderators, speakers and audiences.
The app, mainly used for political topics, offers Egyptians hungry to speak their minds a window to a world they rarely experience, including unfettered discussion with people abroad. Topics range from freedom of expression and democracy to terrorism.
Dubai: You probably heard about Clubhouse and feel like you’ve been left out of the club. If you haven t yet, well, it’s the latest social networking craze in town. The platform has an air of elitism: Clubhouse is an invitation-only audio-chat. And it’s currently available only on iPhones. It’s less than a year old.
But clubhouse’s unique proposition of audio-only social networking has sent people scampering for invitations. Some adjectives used by users to describe it: “Fascinating”, “incredible”, “mind-blowing”. The platform has been depicted as the “Netflix of talk”, or the “Zoom of podcasts”. The app is barely one year old (launched in April 2020). But its popularity has gone through the roof in the last few months.

New social networking sites used to pop up on a seemingly daily basis. As the mobile industry has matured and the cost of entry has increased, that s no longer the case. Perhaps the launch itself is the main reason Clubhouse is having a moment, despite being available only on the best iPhones right now. Or it could be the invitation-only audio chat service has found something just different enough to have legs to be able to stick around for more than a fleeting moment.
Two weeks into my Clubhouse journey, I m not quite ready to give it a thumb in any direction. And yet, I ll admit the app is hard to put down and has piqued my curiosity like it has countless others.
