The Auld Mug is Aotearoa’s Mug and the America’s Cup remains New Zealand’s Cup because Te Rehutai ultimately had a gear that Luna Rossa simply could not match. That gave Team NZ a memorable 7-3 victory to secure their fourth America’s Cup triumph, and their second defence of the Auld Mug. It also made Peter Burling the most successful skipper in the event’s history as he tucked away his 15th race win to leave Russell Coutts and Jimmy Spithill in his wake.

The Government has committed funding towards the next America s Cup defence after Team New Zealand s emphatic win against Luna Rossa.
Future funding will be, however, on the condition that the next defence will be held in New Zealand.
Team New Zealand is understood to be considering a radical proposal for the next America s Cup defence which could be unprecedented in the modern era of the event.
