BUNKER HILL Beth Rull saw some positives in COVID-19, which is quite remarkable considering that the past year has been the most challenging health year of her life – and very little of it had to do with the pandemic.
Rull, a Bunker Hill resident and a counselor in the Gillespie School District had a double mastectomy performed at Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis on April 2. The rest of the year was spent with various combinations of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, including radiation therapy at Alton Memorial Hospital’s Cancer Care Center under the watchful eye of Dr. Gregory Vlacich and his team.

Ruth Pranaitis, 69, died at 10:43 p.m. Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born November 8, 1951 in St. Louis, MO, she was the daughter of Andrew R. and Shirley Ruth (Kellum) Carter. She retired after more than 25 years as a kindergarten teacher for Evangelical School in Godfrey. She was a passionate teacher and loved every single student she taught. She made school a fun and inspiring adventure for all of her kids. She loved traveling and exploring new places with her daughters, especially at her favorite place on earth, Walt Disney World. She always saw the world with a childlike wonder and saw the beauty in the little things, like Christmas lights and the perfect seashell she found on the beach. She was creative and artistic and could master any craft she tried, from cake decorating to making stained glass stepping stones. ALTON Mary Norman is now the new coordinator of Miss Eunice’s Hat Box, the Alton Memorial Hospital gift shop.
Born and raised in Alton, Norman comes from a fashion retail background. She was with New York and Company for 15 years working out of Alton, West County and the Galleria, then five years with Old Navy as first its assistant general manager in charge of merchandising in South County and then general manager of the Edwardsville store.
