PHOENIX â At a time when alcohol sales and drug overdoses are at hitting a new high, a Valley woman was able to turn her life of addiction around, while facing all the challenges that came about during the pandemic.
Natasha Johnston Freed stuck through the Alcoholic Anonymous program, despite all the big changes staff at the Crossroads Drug and Alcohol Treatment facility had to make, in light of the pandemic.
3 Weeks into Dryuary
With apologies to Justin Moore, singer of “That’s Why We Drink”, this is Dry January, or “Dryuary” the month that many many people decide they need to be drinking less. By this far into January, sorry Dryuary, if you’re still going strong on a New Year’s Resolution, good for you. Three weeks is nothing to sneeze at. Especially with what we had to endure with all that 2020 threw at us. Alcohol shouldn’t be used as a coping mechanism, but I’m not here to judge.
Recent survey done by Alcohol Rehab found that over one third of Mainers plan on reducing the amount of alcohol they drink, not just in January but for the entire year. Except during Rowdy Yates Show on Saturday nights on Q106.5. Kidding, I’m kidding. Except if the lockdown continues too deeply into the year.

There was however also a small percentage rise among those who said they did not drink, from 34.7% to 41.3% between March and September.
The latest numbers are a surge on figures published in a survey last month by alcohol education charity Drinkaware, which suggested 26 per cent of people in the UK increased their alcohol consumption between March and June.
A record number of people are drinking more than three times the recommended amount of alcohol a week, according to Public Health England (stock image)
That survey also found most of the increase in consumption was driven by women, with 14 per cent saying they were drinking more than 14 units per week.
