Opinion: The FATF reality check – Alfred Sant

The FATF decision to greylist Malta as a financial centre triggered all the predictable reactions – political, economic, legal and financial. The opposition blamed post-2013 governance under the Joseph Muscat administration for having destroyed Malta’s reputation. The government called the FATF decision “unjustified” since it had implemented 55 out of 58 requirements laid out in the Council of Europe’s Moneyval assessment of Malta’s legislative, regulatory and enforcement systems covering financial services. Business and professional organisations went partway with the view that post-2013 happenings account for the current situation. We were told that Maltese businesses do not “deserve” to be burdened with FATF strictures. Another statement extolled the proficiency and very high standards of local financial professionals. Alfred Sant s confessions

Confessions of a European Maltese by Alfred Sant published by SKS In 2003, Alfred Sant, the well-known politician, intellectual and author, published a first volume bearing the title Confessions of a European Maltese. While being a defence of his own and Labour’s opposition to Malta’s joining the EU as a member, the book gave a detailed account of the first part of his career when he was a diplomat serving Malta in Paris and then Brussels, ending in his decision to resign and go to the USA to obtain a higher degree in business management. This second, and much larger, volume takes up the story with the author now studying at Boston University and subsequently working for a doctoral degree at the much more prestigious Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just across the river from Boston. He gives a clear account of his life as a student in Boston where he did very well, working hard at his studies and living a quiet life, without many friends.

Our country s sad retreat – Chris Said

Unjust. That’s how Labour had the cheek to try to spin the news of the international community warning investors to think twice before betting on Malta. It is unjust. However, not towards the government that brought the shocking condemnation upon itself by embracing corruption but towards the hardworking Maltese people who trusted Labour with their future. This is not the start of the quasi-post-pandemic, pre-electoral, feel-good campaign Labour strategists at Mile End were hoping for. So much for all the glitz around the launch of the 10-year economic vision for Malta, reminiscent of that other vision some time ago to turn the country into the world’s first blockchain island. They did nail that pretty quickly, didn’t they?
