Mother cleared of taking pornographic photos of her children

A mother who took photos of her nudist husband in the presence of the couple’s undressed children with the intention of using them in separation proceedings has been spared a three-year jail term on appeal. The woman had been found guilty in 2019 of producing the indecent images of the couple’s two minor children, aged three and one-and-a-half. She had been acquitted of separate defilement charges. Those images, over 70 in all, featured her naked husband in the shower, in bed or even reading a book while in the presence of the children who were also sometimes undressed, occasionally touching the man’s private parts.

The couple had argued whilst out for New Year’s Eve, but the row had continued when they returned home. The accused is understood to have bitten his wife before eventually stabbing her with the kitchen knife.

Court again blocks move of excavator from site of fatal Ħamrun house collapse

A magistrates’ court has declared that it will not allow construction works to continue nor machinery to be removed from the site of a fatal Ħamrun house collapse earlier this year, pending judgment.  “You can repair a truck but you cannot bring back a person’s life,” stated Magistrate Joseph Mifsud, voicing aloud his position on two applications filed by defence lawyers assisting four persons currently accused with the involuntary homicide of Miriam Pace. They are Roderick Camilleri, 36, from Rabat, the project’s architect; Anthony Mangion, a 72-year-old architect from Gżira who served as the construction project’s site technical officer; 36-year-old excavation contractor Ludwig Dimech from Żebbuġ; and 42-year-old construction worker Nicholas Spiteri, from Mqabba.

Mqabba murder: Owen Schembri temporarily released on €50,000 bail bond One of two men accused of carrying out a fatal shooting at Mqabba last July, has been temporarily released from arrest on a €50,000 bail bond 17 December 2020, 10:12am by Matthew Agius Owen Schembri, one of two men accused of carrying out a fatal shooting at Mqabba last July, has been temporarily released from arrest on a €50,000 bail bond. 18-year-old Schembri and his friend Leon Debono, 19, are accused of murdering Saviour Gaffarena and grievously injuring his cousin Vince Gaffarena.  Saviour Gaffarena, aged 27, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in triq il-Konvoj ta’ Santa Marija, Mqabba. 17-year-old Vince Gaffarena was shot in the chest and the face, but survived. 

Murder suspect released against €50,000 bail bond

One of two men accused of murdering a man and attempting to kill his cousin has been released on bail against a €50,000 bond.  Owen Schembri, who denies his involvement in the fatal shooting at Mqabba last July, was on Thursday granted bail against a €15,000 deposit and a €35,000 personal guarantee by Madam Justice Edwina Grima. Schembri, 18, and another suspect, 19-year-old Leon Debono stand accused with murdering Saviour Gaffarena and grievously injuring his cousin Vince Gaffarena.  Saviour Gaffarena, 27, had been found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in Triq il-Konvoj ta’ Santa Marija, Mqabba.  17-year-old Vince Gaffarena was shot in the chest and the face, but survived the attack.
