A mosaic of the Mayflower is set to be unveiled on May 13. A MOSAIC of the Mayflower is set to take a commemorative journey to Hampshire. A mosaic, co-designed by the residents of supported housing schemes, Burtons, in Plymstock and Abbeyfield House, in Hartley will make the commemorative journey from Plymouth, to West End this month. In 2020, a venture between Abbeyfield and Mayflower 400 Community Sparks enabled Abbeyfield’s residents to embark on a creative mosaic project, planning their vision of a piece of artwork that will promote the legacy of the Mayflower voyage. When completed, the mosaic will sit in a publicly accessible garden at Mayflower Court, Abbeyfield’s new independent living scheme in Millbay.

Re: “Stop dreaming about returning trains to E&N corridor,” April 29 we have had many discussions over the years with Denise Savoie and her advocacy group regarding their dream of ripping up the tracks and turning the rail corridor into a trail. The ICF supports trails on the corridor and believe rails and trails can co-exist, as evidenced by more than 100 kilometres of trail that have been developed on the corridor already. We have invited Savoie to work with us, on more than one occasion, to further develop our trail network. However, she is unwilling to accept anything but the complete removal of the track, and with it, any potential for rail service on the Island.

The results of all the effort that has gone into trapping pests at Rangikapiti are plain to see according to Friends of Rangikapiti chairman John Haines. Last winter, we planted koru, or native hydrangea, in a couple of parts of the reserve, he said. This attractive plant is ordinarily found only on pest-free islands, as it is very tasty to possums. Early settlers used to boil it up like cabbage. Our plants are thriving, many have bloomed and are setting seed, and there s hardly a bite out of any of them. Likewise kohokohe is an indicator plant for possums.
