Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn hosted a town hall on Tuesday (April 20) to talk about public places in Fairfax County named after Confederates.
The discussion was based on the Fairfax County History Commission’s 539-page inventory, which was first released in December and details the history and context of each place named after a prominent Confederate figure.
The project traces its roots to last summer, when the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors directed the commission to study the legal and financial implications of possible name changes throughout the county.
The commission determined that, out of about 26,500 total named places in the county, approximately 157 streets, parks, monuments, subdivisions, and public places in Fairfax County bear names with ties to the Confederacy.

If Metro’s board of directors adopts the proposed Fiscal Year 2022 approved by its finance and capital committee yesterday (Thursday), the start of service on the second phase of the Silver Line will officially be delayed until next year.
The $4.7 billion operating and capital budget moves the start date for Silver Line Phase 2 from July 1, 2021 as stated in the FY 2021 operating budget to January 2022 at the earliest, citing the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority’s expectation that it will be ready to hand over the project to Metro by Labor Day.
The budget also defers an additional $43.1 million subsidy contribution to the project until FY 2023, though $20 million will still be included in FY 2022 “to mitigate Silver Line Phase 2 service equity impacts,” according to the budget summary.

Fairfax County defers vote on new U.S. flag restrictions Fairfax County Government Center [Sky s the Limit Media]
Fairfax County officials deferred a vote on new restrictions on how residents and businesses display the U.S. flag.
After five hours of public comment on an expansive proposal to change zoning rules in the county, to include changes to the county’s flag ordinance, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to take up the issue once again at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 23.
An 11th-hour change to the flag ordinance was made just before supervisors voted to defer the measure. They agreed to allow residents to fly flags as large as 50 square feet and to enable businesses to have flags as large as 150-square-feet.
