VANCOUVER Dozens gathered around Mill Lake in Abbotsford on Saturday to draw attention to missing and murdered Indigenous women across Canada. “We’re here to raise awareness to this and let people know that we deserve the right to feel safe,” said event organizer Krista MacInnis. “We deserve the right to know that if one of us goes missing, someone will go looking for us.” The march was sparked by the murder of First Nations woman Jana Williams. Strolling down Frankel Leó út near the Lukács Baths in Buda, you pass an unassuming ruined building with a small lake, whose octagonal dome shape is reminiscent of Budapest’s Turkish past. The former Népgőzfürdő steam baths have been out of use since the 1970s, but most extraordinarily, it is here that a small set of stairs takes you deep into the belly of the mountain, revealing the János Molnár Cave system. Completely submerged in waters of 22-23 degrees, only trained divers may visit for research purposes, and only a fraction of the caves have been explored.

Christopher McQuillen, home in Winnetka over the holidays, told his father that he planned to visit Wisconsin with some friends. It seems like such a routine conversation that Joe McQuillen, the father of Christopher McQuillen, says that he did not even remember the last words that he had said to his son. However, when he received the call from a relative of his son s friend on Sunday about how Christopher McQuillen had been lost.
After taking a canoe ride on an icy lake, 21-year-old McQuillen had vanished in southern Wisconsin. He slipped through their fingers like water, and it happened so suddenly. There is no mistaking, however, that McQuillen was dearly loved. The grief had been only multiplied when they learned that not just McQuillen but all four of the young men involved had been killed in the accident.

Becoming an artist takes time, hard work, and some business sense
The New York Magazine senior art critic and columnist tours the world lecturing about how anyone can become an artist. Interestingly, the same advice can be found from artists right here in Abbotsford on just as good authority: work hard, develop your skills, find your voice, and don’t be afraid to fail. Do we really need a Pulitzer Prize winner to teach us these things?
How about romantic dreams of becoming an artist filled with glitzy exhibitions, critical acclaim, and world fame? These may lure some, but for two Abbotsford artists, hard work, skill development, planning, and networking have proven key to building a successful foundation for their careers. The years spent developing their art practices at UFV’s School of Creative Arts (SoCA) certainly helped influence Luke Pardy and Jesse Klassen as they now focus on their next steps within the art world.
