BUCKEYE LAKE - Buckeye Lake leaders hope the construction of a new pavilion can be used to host concerts and community events in the coming years.
Located beside the village-owned water tower on Mill Dam Road, construction began on the 25 by 50 foot pavilion last week and was expected to be completed early this week.
According to Buckeye Lake Mayor Peggy Wells, the project was several years in the making, taking four to five years of planning. She explained years ago, money was designated for streetscape projects in the Millersport and Buckeye Lake areas due to the downtown in the economy surrounding the lake.

Assuming all goes according to plan, Des Moines County 99 will get a lot of tender loving care over the next five years.
County Engineer Brian Carter s $22 million roads plan for Fiscal Years 2022-26 includes $6 million in road projects just on DMC 99 and $2.5 million for a bridge over Dry Branch Creek, which is located about a mile north of Flint Creek. It s a major project, Carter said of the Dry Branch Creek bridge.
Iowa Code 309.22 requires the board of supervisors must submit a plan for road construction for the upcoming fiscal year, as well as the proceeding four fiscal years. According to Carter, years one through four of the plan are expected to represent a realistic representation of what the county expects to spend in the proceeding fiscal years. In year five, the county generally can put any projects that need to be considered in the following years on their radar.

After more than a decade of planning, Des Moines County 99 bridge work is finally underway
Those living north of the bridge will have to take an alternative route until this spring or summer, but the completed project should be worth the wait.

It s easy to overlook the important things.
Things like that funky little concrete bridge across Flint Creek on Highway 99 on the north edge of Burlington, just past the Case-New Holland plant.
That short span connects Burlington to the county towns along the Mississippi River. It s how all the Case New Holland workers who live in Mediapolis, Wapello and Oakville get to and from their jobs every day.
