Driving up from Wellington after work, we wonder what will await us at our destination. The four of us are to spend the weekend in Āpiti, a village in northern Manawatū, nestled beneath the Ruahine Range. None of us have ever heard of it. Once we pass Feilding, we’re the only car remaining – and winding our way around the lonely roads in the dark, we can’t help but consider horror film scenarios. Our townie fears seem validated when someone uses the little cell service available to look up the menu at the local tavern. The weekend special is “Beef Wellington”. Gulp.
