The Holland Area Arts Council presented their Regional High School Art Competition winners.
Artwork made from 11 area high schools and 15 teachers was selected to display online from today until April 24.
The Arts Council chooses a juror whose task is to choose the work to be displayed. This yearâs juror, Grand Haven professional artist and retired longtime Hudsonville art teacher, Maggie Bandstra selected seven pieces for awards from the 118 works submitted.
Participating schools include Black River Public School, Coopersville, Grand Haven, Grandville, Holland Christian, Holland, Saugatuck, West Ottawa, Wyoming, and Zeeland East and West.

YPSILANTI, MI Eastern Michigan University has been named one of the nation’s most military and veteran friendly universities in the country, according to new rankings.
EMU was ranked second in the nation and first in Michigan for large public universities, according to Military Friendly’s 2021-22 list. Military Friendly provides a comprehensive guide for veterans and their families, using data sources from federal agencies, veteran students and survey information from participating organizations, according to an EMU news release.

Sculptor and Michigan State University Master’s graduate O.V. Verne Shaffer died last week at 93 years.
Shaffer sculpted the “Sunseed” statue displayed in the Botanical Gardens on campus. The sculpture was a gift from the E.J. and Julia Crozier McClearly family to the university.
While earning his Master’s degree at MSU, Shaffer worked as an art professor at Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan in the early 1950s. After graduating, he moved to Beloit, Wisconsin where he worked as an art professor and direct
