With California set to do away with most of the state’s COVID-19 restrictions and prepare to fully reopen on June 15, some Black leaders and medical professionals are taking stock of the pandemic’s impact on Black communities.
They are also tracking readiness in those areas to return to business as usual.
As of May 7, over 60% of Californians had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. And 44% of people in the state are now fully vaccinated.

The coronavirus pandemic worldwide is as bad as ever, driven by surges in India and South America. But you wouldn’t know it from the strides Southern California has made. New cases and hospitalizations in LA County are down far enough to qualify LA for the least restrictive yellow tier of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s reopening plan.
The city and county have a plentiful supply of vaccines, and they’re offering appointment-free shots at multiple locations.

Before the pandemic, 16-year-old Joshua Espinoza was able to visit his family every weekend. But for the last year, time with his mother, father and brother has been limited to quick sessions at his group home to reduce the chances of coronavirus infection.
As of Monday, the 11th grader with severe autism is among an estimated 4.4 million statewide with high-risk medical conditions and disabilities who will join the state’s vaccine priority list, significantly increasing his odds of receiving the doses he needs to once again travel to his family’s home in Paradise Hills.
It has been heartbreakingly clear, said his mother, Maria Espinoza, that her son really, really misses their weekends together.
As COVID-19 vaccination distribution accelerates in California and nationwide, equity remains a concern. Under-served and disproportionately impacted communities are getting vaccinated at a lower rate, according to state data.
