I WAS RAISED BY MY GRANDMOTHER in the Robert Taylor Homes, a housing project on Chicago’s South Side, but frequently stayed at the home of my aunt Rosemary Jarrett, my grandmother’s oldest daughter. When my adoption was finalized, my birth certificate and other documents indelibly amended, my aunt became, legally, my sister, a novel relation that would be indispensable, steadying.
My aunt had back then a marvelously filthy mouth, supplemented by a full and ribald laugh. She inherited from her mother a talent for entertaining, as well as an exuberant, maximalist approach to the adornment of self and home. These impulses converged in the art parties she hosted when I was younger.

MEMBERS of West Huntspill Parish Council paid tribute to their former chairman as they switched on their Christmas lights this year. The council planted a Christmas tree on West Huntspill Common in 2016 in memory of Ken Hall, the former chairman of the parish council, after he sadly passed away. Each year the tree has been decorated with red lights and councillors have gathered at the tree to pay tribute to Ken during the festive period. Alan Higgs, a member of West Huntspill Parish Council, said the bushy and brightly lit tree has brought a glow to their village and lives.
Christmas tree lit up in West Huntspill in memory of Council Chairman
A colourful Christmas tree has been lit up in West Huntspill in memory of the former Chairman of West Huntspill Parish Council.
A Christmas tree was planted on West Huntspill Common in 2016 in memory of Ken Hall, the Chairman of the Parish Council.
Parish Council member Alan Higgs adds: “Ken was a larger-than-life, very much loved and respected member of our community. Ken had passed unexpectedly and had left a very large hole in many aspects of our village life.”
Ken’s tree is always decorated with red lights and the council has always had big plans of eventually making it the main Christmas Tree on the village’s Common during the festive period.
