Irish junior Providence Resources has denied holding merger talks, following a report by Ireland s
Business Post on February 7 claiming that the company had been approached by Norway s SpotOn Energy with an offer.
Providence and its partner Lansdowne Oil & Gas reached an agreement in December on farming out a 50% interest in the Barryroe oil and gas field off Ireland s south coast to SpotOn, in order to fund further project work.
PROVIDENCE Resources says it is “not currently involved in any merger discussions” after a report that the Norwegian firm that is its partner in the Barryroe offshore field had made a merger proposal.

Irish Gas Lobby Welcomes Clarity on Licensing
The Irish Offshore Operators Association (IOOA) has welcomed the Irish government s renewed commitment to honour existing oil and gas licences, despite closing the door on new permits.
Security of supply and access to cheaper and more sustainable gas are important objectives for a country on the fringes of Europe that imports pipeline gas from the UK – itself at the end of the continental gas supply chain – and still burns some peat for power generation.

Ireland s oil and gas industry has welcomed a decision by the nation’s government to exclude current oil and gas licences from a new legislative ban on future exploration and extraction.
Environment Minister Eamon Ryan obtained cabinet approval to introduce the legislation, which will be included in the Climate Action & Low Carbon Amendment Bill that is set to go before the Irish parliament on Wednesday.
Green Party leader Ryan said: The decision we have made today to legislate for a ban on new oil exploration and extraction will send a powerful message, within Ireland and internationally, that Ireland is moving away from fossil fuels towards a renewable future.
