City council split over spending reserves
In a split vote that highlighted a council divided over concerns about continuing to dip into dwindling cash reserves for non-budgeted items, the City of Perry recently voted to move forward with purchasing an estimated $60,000 in replacement playground equipment at a local park.
“All I can say is, ‘Lord help us,” Mayor Alan Hall said following the city council’s 3-2 vote to pull an estimated $60,000 from the city’s savings to fund two new pieces of playground equipment at Gerald B. Walker Park (formerly Jerkins Park) located on Warner Avenue.

Tributes have been paid to a man who worked tirelessly behind the scenes for decades to help the mayors of Redbridge.
A former Grenadier Guard, former chief mayoral officer John Evans first joined Redbridge Council as a chauffeur to the Redbridge mayor in 1989 and soon after became the chief mayoral officer - a role he dutifully fulfilled until his retirement in 2010.
He died aged 79 after a short illness on April 4.
His first career in the military was the perfect set up for his role in the mayor s office, where he was very particular about getting the pomp and circumstance just right.

In an area of London that attracts few tourists, even at the best of times, there is a place called Friar Benet’s Kitchen. It’s not, as you might expect, a restaurant with a sign featuring a jolly medieval monk holding up a flagon of ale.
But it is an eatery imbued with an ancient monastic spirit. You can trace its roots all the way back to St. Francis, who lived among the poor of Assisi.

Fr Christopher Joseph McBride, a member of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, told CNA in an interview that the soup kitchen in Canning Town, East London, has fed the hungry for the past 20 years.
