KNOXVILLE, Tenn. A Knoxville man accused of trying to help ISIS terrorists will remain in jail until his scheduled June trial, a federal magistrate judge ruled Thursday.
The judge said prosecutors presented evidence he translated an ISIS execution video and was in contact with a known ISIS recruiter.
Benjamin Carpenter, 31, faces charges for attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS).
In her ruling, Judge Debra Poplin said prosecutors convinced her Carpenter is a clear danger to the community and should remain in jail.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) A Tennessee man held a key role in spreading English-language propaganda for the Islamic State group, federal prosecutors announced Monday.
Benjamin Alan Carpenter, 31, of Knoxville, has been in custody since his March 24 arrest, according to a news release from acting U.S. Attorney Francis M. Hamilton III’s office. A detention hearing was held Monday, but a judge did not immediately decide whether he should be free pending trial.
Carpenter was charged in a federal indictment with attempting to provide material support and resources to IS.
Carpenter, also known as Abu Hamza, provided English translations of IS media content to a person he believed to be associated with IS, prosecutors said. The person was actually a covert FBI employee, officials said

Prosecutors say a Tennessee man has been helping spread Islamic State propaganda, but a defense attorney told a judge the man’s a loser who lives with his mother and isn’t a threat.
Benjamin Alan Carpenter, dubbed “Abu Hamza,” was arrested in Knoxville, Tennessee, on March 24 after a grand jury indicted him on charges of attempting to provide material support and resources to ISIS, the Justice Department announced Monday, following a detention hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Debra C. Poplin.
