I recall our first trip in 1948 when I was six years old, and how frightening parts of it were. Some of it, built through the canyon, rested on trestles attached to the rock walls above the river with room for only one car to negotiate at a time. I recall one occasion when my father allowed my very newly licensed mother to drive and her horror upon meeting a car on one of those parts of the road where it was too narrow to pass. She threw up her hands, shrieking in alarm, before my dad helped her to a point where the two cars could safely pass.
