Salem City Schools working on summer plans to help students catch up

Salem City Schools working on summer plans to help students catch up Many school systems report absences and failing grades in middle and high schools Updated:  Tags:  Like many other school divisions, Salem is planning for summer. “We expect to have a much larger credit recovery summer school for middle and high school students than ever before. Probably the largest summer school program in the school division’s history,” said Dr. Alan Seibert, Salem City Schools superintendent. Seibert said they are a few steps ahead because years ago they started talking about using summers differently. “The vast majority of school divisions are seeing a high percentage of students failing two or more classes compared to last year,” said Michael Bolling, during a recent Virginia Board of Education meeting.

Readying for second semester, Salem implements new interventions for students

Salem City Schools is rolling out interventions aimed at providing additional support to students who are learning partially or fully virtual. With the second semester set to begin next week, educators are making a concerted effort to give students additional face-to-face opportunities to boost their ability to do well academically. Students who have struggled with 100% online learning — those who are failing classes or nearly failing — are being encouraged to return to in-person instruction, space permitting. Students who need additional engagement will also have the opportunity to attend remediation on Wednesday mornings, and teachers are creating more online office hours. “It’s really about keeping tabs,” Assistant Superintedent Curtis Hicks said.
