Tennessee criminal justice reform: Gov Bill Lee pushes diversion, reentry plan

Nashville Tennessean Gov. Bill Lee is nearing a victory on his long-anticipated criminal justice reform agenda, legislation that seeks to curb the number of nonviolent people returning to prison and give inmates being released a better chance at succeeding. But it s a proposal Lee and his administration have had to work harder to sell to conservative legislators conditioned to support a tough on crime stance. Passing these major criminal justice reform bills in Tennessee has been a two-year effort, in part slowed by the pandemic, to convince more Republicans to embrace a smart on crime approach, as Lee and others in the movement describe the strategy.

MacArthur Fellow, UCS Science Network, UCS | March 15, 2021, 11:23 am EDT This post is a part of a series on It’s hard to lose a long-term friendship. That happened to me last year. My friendship did not survive my unwillingness to “stay in my lane”. I met my friend – let’s call him T – while I was a student at Cornwall School in Dortmund. Back in 1966, our family moved from suburban Maryland to Dortmund in Germany. My parents had to decide whether to enroll me in a German school or a British Army school. Because I spoke no German at the time, they chose the British Army school.
