Pet food recall expanded; More than 70 dogs died from suspected poisoning Dog, cat food recalled after deaths, illnesses Published:  Tags:  Here’s the info from the FDA: On December 30, 2020, Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. announced a recall of certain lots of Sportmix pet food products after FDA was alerted about reports of at least 28 dogs that died and eight that were ill after consuming the recalled Sportmix pet food. Multiple product samples were tested by the Missouri Department of Agriculture and found to contain very high levels of aflatoxins. Aflatoxins are toxins produced by the mold  Aspergillus flavus and, at high levels, can cause illness and death in pets. The toxins can be present even if there is no visible mold.

Johnson, CNN Posted: Jan 12, 2021 / 04:13 PM EST (CNN) The Food and Drug Administration has expanded a recall and is alerting pet owners and veterinary professionals about high levels of aflatoxin in some pet foods after 70 dogs reportedly died and over 80 others were sickened. The dog food in question has been identified as certain Sportmix products manufactured by Evansville-based Midwestern Pet Foods. The products were voluntarily recalled by the company on Dec. 30, but Midwestern Pet Foods expanded the recall to include additional products that contain corn and were made in their Oklahoma manufacturing plant on Tuesday, according to the FDA.

The FDA has started an investigation into the source of aflatoxin poisoning at Midwestern Pet Foods, which at high levels can cause illness and death in pets. To date, there have been 70 reports of pets dying from eating the food and 80 pet illnesses related to the product.
