After Gov. Gavin Newsom s 2019 moratorium on California executions, a group of condemned inmates agreed to halt their civil rights lawsuit questioning the constitutionality of the state s execution practices.   But, some county prosecutors, including Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin, were incensed by the governor s decision and have turned to the courts in an effort to get Newsom s moratorium overruled and capital punishment reinstated in California.  On March 5, in the latest salvo in this case, four community organizations and an American Civil Liberties Union affiliate asked a California appeals court to reign in Hestrin and the district attorneys of San Bernardino and San Mateo counties who are seeking to overturn the condemned inmates agreement.
