ON Thursday, May 27, it will be the 54th anniversary of the creation of states by General Yakubu Gowon, GCFR. The question is, what is so special about 54th anniversary? The answer is that it is special because that was the biggest attempt to protect and guarantee the interests of the minorities in Nigeria. It was also a strike on the backbone of the four regions at that time in Nigeria. Regrettably, the objectives for the creation of states as announced by General Yakubu Gowon on May 27, 1967 have not been realized. I know there will not be celebrations on Thursday May 27 in the country for the challenges of insecurity that we face nationwide. Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has felicitated with Muslims on the successful completion of Ramadan fasting, urging them to celebrate Eid-el-Fitri moderately in face of the COVID-19 pandemic and the insecurity challenges in the country.
Abiodun, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, noted that Muslims had engaged in the spiritual exercise as directed by Allah for the past one month, calling on the faithful not to do away with love, prayers, unity and harmony that formed the basis of the holy month.
He further urged them to continue to offer prayers for peace and unity in the country, particularly in the face of security and economic challenges.
The Biafra Nations League, BNL, has alleged that most attacks in the Eastern Region especially in Akwa Ibom, Rivers States are politically-motivated.
The group said that some cultists who are being sponsored by politicians are hiding under ‘unknown gunmen’ to perpetrate evil.
BNL said this while refuting reports linking unknown gunmen with Biafra agitation.
In a statement on Wednesday by its Deputy National Leader and Head of Operations, BBs Media Ebuta A.Takon, the group said it has come up with the conclusion that some of the attacks especially in Rivers State, Akwa Ibom and some South East towns are carried out by sponsored cultists who are being used by aggrieved Politicians.
