International Sculpture Day was commemorated at the end of April, which of course made us think about the sculpture garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) in the heart of City Park. The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden at NOMA covers 11 acres of City Park alongside the museum. It features two lagoons, live oaks and more than 90 sculptures donated by the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Foundation. After its upgrade and expansion in 2019, this gorgeous park oasis became a must see for both New Orleans residents and visitors alike.
Gardens and museum are high on our list of backdrops for a romantic and dreamy “I Do.” There’s something about being surrounded by works of art and large live oak trees that can’t be beat. Lucky for residents and visitors, NOMA and the Sculpture Garden can also serve as the setting to some aspect of your Big Day or wedding event. Chicago native T. Lang chose to radically change her life with a move to Atlanta 12 years ago after living in New York City. And she’s now firmly enmeshed in a changed South where her family formerly dwelled for decades. “This is my home,” she says. “I own property, I own space, I’m a tenured professor at Spelman.” For Lang, Atlanta is a place of possibility, for both Black and white people, to reclaim and remake the notion of the South for the greater good.

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) announces the opening of the Lapis Center for the Arts. The newly renovated cultural space will serve multiple functions, including film screenings, lectures, theater and dance performances, and much more. The renovation, begun in January 2020, features state-of-the-art surround sound and theatrical lighting, and accommodates seating for up to 360 people. Advancing the museum’s aspirations as a nexus for the arts in New Orleans, the Lapis Center will serve as a platform for interdisciplinary arts experiences and provide opportunities for expanded as well as new community partnerships.
