Dovecote drama: Flying back through time to tales of royalty and romance

DOVECOTES have a way of flying us back through time, and connecting us to one of the greatest royal stories of all time and the composition of some of the most romantic poems in the English language. In the days before refrigerators, dovecotes were important as they proved a regular source of fresh eggs and meat. They became fashionable accessories to a country estate around 1700, although the older, more rustic, are centuries older than that, and most of the building of dovecotes in our area was done by 1800 – however, you know all that because you’ve been following what has been a long running series on the locations of dovecotes.

Does Albany Community Police Training Include Racist Rhetoric?

Does Albany Community Police Training Include Racist Rhetoric? A lieutenant with the Albany Police Department is accused of making racist statements during a recent Community Police Academy training class. According to Albany Proper, Nairobi Vives, the chairperson of the Albany Community Police Review Board, is making allegations that racist rhetoric was used during recent Albany Community Police Academy training sessions. Ms. Vives wrote a letter to the Community Council last week alleging that Lieutenant Howard Schecter made racist and disparaging comments during recent training sessions. The Community Police Academy allows citizens to attend weekly classes to learn how policing works, to dispel misconceptions between police officers and citizens and it also gives citizens opportunities to make officers aware of their concerns.

Cheery convenience store Food Near Me opens in downtown Albany

Table Hopping By Steve Barnes, senior writer on May 6, 2021 at 1:52 PM Food Near Me, a vibrantly colorful bodega with homemade food including salads, vegetable juices and fruit smoothies, as well as the only supply of household basics available anywhere in downtown Albany proper since a Walgreen’s location closed in February, opened Monday (5/3) at 87 N. Pearl St. The space, between The Hollow Bar + Kitchen and the former Capital Repertory Theatre, replaces a minimalist (to put it kindly) convenience store that was open only weekdays during the day for about 20 years and vanished suddenly last year. The new store is owned by Kevin Skeen, who tells me that he relocated from New York City a few years ago and has been working on Food Near Me for the better part of a year. It is his first venture as a proprietor. The shop also has the expected array of snacks and beverages, and I’m told a beer license has been applied for.
