Reminder: new nitrates rules in effect from 1 January

New nitrates rules come into effect on 1 January. The new rules, aimed at reducing nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment loss to water, apply mainly to farms in derogation, but all farms will have to ensure that farm roadways are cambered away from water bodies and drains or are bunded to ensure no run-off enters the water. This rule also applies to tillage farms. Fence stock Farmers with a grassland stocking rate of over 170kg of organic N/ha (even where slurry is exported to stay under 170kg/ha) must fence stock at least 1.5m from watercourses. Watercourses are marked with a solid blue line on Ordnance Survey Ireland maps (1:5000 scale).

Watch: making changes for new nitrates rules

SHARING OPTIONS: Stock will need to be fenced 1.5m away from watercourses on farms, with grassland stocking rates over 170kg of organic nitrogen per hectare. On 1 January, new nitrates rules come into effect. The Irish Farmers Journal has produced a short video to describe some of the changes that need to be made with regard to the fencing of watercourses, drinking points, movement of water troughs and redirecting flow from roadways. New rules regarding roadways affect all farms, regardless of stocking rate. Roadways will need to be bunded or cambered to prevent run-off to these water features and that run-off should be redirected to the field.
