Circular economy approach is key to decarbonising use of steel and concrete
Heavy industry must work together and adopt circular economy thinking in order to support the construction industry in the drive to carbon net zero, according to the sustainability boss at steel manufacturer ArcelorMittal.
“The challenge to decarbonise cannot be left to each industry to work in a silo,” said ArcelorMittal head of sustainability dialogue and disclosure Annie Heaton, speaking at the Path to Net Zero event hosted by Autodesk last week.
Heaton stressed that circular economies are the path to decarbonisation and urged heavy industry to look again at their operations. “When you think about the way carbon is a by-product of industry, you then realise immediately that that carbon can be reused and if we can make carbon work in a circular way we can actually avoid the whole harm that carbon is causing in terms of climate change,” she said.
