She died of complications of coronavirus infection, said Tommye Myrick, a friend and local theater director.
âAmong actors in New Orleans, there was Carol Sutton - and there was everybody else,â said David Cuthbert, a retired Times-Picayune critic. âShe opened her mouth, and out came truth. Wherever she was on stage, that was center stage.â
After making her acting debut in the late 1960s in Dashiki Project Theatre productions, Sutton appeared on stages around the city in productions such as âThe Last Madam,â âNative Tonguesâ and âA Raisin in the Sun.â She moved to television in 1974 with âThe Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittmanâ and went on to roles in such movies as âMonsterâs Ball,â âRay,â âSteel Magnoliasâ and âThe Help,â and in the television series âTremé,â âTrue Detectiveâ and âLovecraft Country.â
