ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reported 249 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, eight of which were among nonresidents. The state reported no additional deaths of Alaska residents tied to the virus. The state remains in high alert status, according to the average daily rate of cases per 100,000 of population over the last two weeks. Six of the state’s major regions, including the Municipality of Anchorage, are in the high alert status, which, according to the state, indicates widespread transmission of the virus.

According to DHSS, transmission of the virus is currently increasing statewide, and the state as a whole is still in the high-alert level when it come to the average case rate per 100,000 people over the last two weeks. Virus transmission has increased for the second week in a row, according to a weekly case update from the state.

No new deaths were reported. Since the pandemic started there has been a state total of deaths at 223 residents and one non-resident. Six of the new COVID-19 cases were nonresidents. The new COVID-19 cases bring the state total of cases to 50,218 residents and nonresidents. At least 1,101 residents and nonresidents have been hospitalized with COVID-19 since the pandemic began. An additional 74 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 and another six are hospitalized and suspected of having COVID-19. Ten of these patients are on a ventilator.
