Committee Hears Possible Constitutional Amendments On Arkansas Legislative Power

Credit Arkansas Senate The Senate State Agencies and Public Affairs committee spent nearly an hour Tuesday hearing about and discussing two possible amendments to the Arkansas Constitution. Both deal with the power of the legislature itself.  Under Senate Joint Resolution 10, the legislature would be able to convene in an extraordinary session without needing the governor to call them in. A joint proclamation of the Speaker of the House and President Pro Tempore of the Senate would be enough to bring lawmakers together. 

New ruling means no jury trials in Arkansas until May 1

There will be no jury trials in Arkansas until May 1, according to a ruling issued Friday by the Arkansas Supreme Court. The action to extend the prohibition of jury trials was taken due “to a continued high level of COVID-19 positive tests and hospitalizations,” the court’s order noted. Through the continuing course of the pandemic, the state’s highest court has scheduled various times for jury trials to resume but pushed the dates back because infection and hospitalization numbers continued to track upward.

43 proposed Arkansas constitutional amendments filed

The field is set for proposed constitutional amendments that may be referred by the 93rd General Assembly for the 2022 general election. The state legislature can refer up to three proposed amendments for voter consideration every regular session.Talk Business and Politics reports the 43 amendment proposals range from restricting a proposed casino in Pope County to tort reform to recall elections and even the state legislature calling itself into a special session. Some of the resolutions for consideration have details of their title, while others are “shell bills.” The “shell bills” will likely be amended to provide more details of their intentions.
