The New York Yankees just got the player who best represents today s style of baseball. He is Joey Gallo, and when he comes to bat, the fielders might as well take a break.
Gallo, whom the Yankees acquired in a trade with the Texas Rangers on Thursday, has walked, struck out or homered the sport s so-called three true outcomes in 57.7% of his plate appearances this season. His career batting average is .211, the lowest in the majors since his 2015 debut among players with as many turns at bat.

All-Star slugger Joey Gallo is headed to the Bronx to give the New York Yankees some much-needed punch from the left side.
The Yankees have reached a deal to get Gallo from the Texas Rangers, a person familiar with the trade told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday night because the move had not yet been announced and was subject to approval of medical records of the players involved.
There s been a hole in the Bombers outfield ever since center fielder Aaron Hicks went down with a season-ending wrist injury. That paved the way for Brett Gardner to get plenty of playing time in his age-37 season, rather than providing depth as this team s fourth outfielder.
Now, manager Aaron Boone has an All-Star caliber outfielder to pencil into the lineup day in and day out.
Gallo, 27, is hitting .223 (69-for-310) through 95 games this season in Texas, clubbing 25 home runs and driving in 55 runs. He s a two-time All-Star (making the team this year), a slugger who s blasted 40-plus homers in two single seasons and a Gold Glove Award winner for his defense in 2020.
