Massachusetts lawmakers seek to boost public education funding beyond Gov Charlie Baker s budget plan

Massachusetts lawmakers seek to boost public education funding beyond Gov. Charlie Baker’s budget plan Updated Apr 07, 2021; The Massachusetts Legislature’s top budget writers have reached an agreement on school funding, proposing allocating more money than what Gov. Charlie Baker included in his fiscal 2022 budget plan. The House and Senate Ways and Means committees propose a $219.6 million increase in Chapter 70 funds from fiscal 2021, bringing the total amount to $5.503 billion. The state’s landmark education law that took effect in November 2019 requires that budget writers approve funding increases over seven years to prepare for full implementation in fiscal 2027. Under the new law, the state will provide $1.5 billion more annually for public education once it is fully implemented with more funds going to school districts with high concentrations of poor students and higher numbers of English language learners.

Lawmakers proposing more new school aid than Baker

BOSTON — An agreement announced Wednesday by legislative budget-writers would steer more state dollars to local schools than the $45.6 billion fiscal 2022 spending plan that Gov. Charlie Baker put forward in January. Ways and Means Committee Chairpersons Sen. Michael Rodrigues and Rep. Aaron Michlewitz said in a joint statement that they had reached agreement around local aid funding for next year’s budget. The House Ways and Means Committee plans to roll out its budget proposal next week. Michael Rodrigues FACEBOOK PHOTO The deal, Michlewitz and Rodrigues said, includes a $219.6 million increase to Chapter 70 aid to school districts, up from the $197.7 million hike Baker proposed. It would fund unrestricted government aid at $1.16 billion, matching Baker’s level.
